While Marbella remains the gold standard when it comes to Costa del Sol property, its five-star influence has spread and now the Golden Triangle has become the latest phrase to enter the real estate lexicon. Apart from the city and its suburbs, the inclusion of Estepona and Benahavís has resulted in property in these latter two locations being considered as very desirable. While the charming fishing town of Estepona has spawned its own (New) Golden Mile to rival Marbella’s, Benahavís is in a very different position. Situated on the south face of the Serranía de Ronda, this is the western Costa del Sol’s most mountainous village and has become one of the area’s most prized addresses. Locals will concur that there is little mystery as to why this is. Of all the communities on the Costa del Sol, Benahavís is one of the friendliest and now supports a fully integrated population of locals and expats who regularly socialise at the many activities that take place in the village, from children’s workshops to sports and cultural events. In the past few years even the Last Night of the Proms has become the excuse for a get-together, as British expats invite other foreigners and interested locals to join them to celebrate the closing concert of this annual musical season. Benahavís even has its own municipal pool, which is kept in meticulous condition and is a popular place for families, particularly during the summer. Benahavís is also famous for its restaurants, which regularly attract visitors looking for a picturesque place to enjoy an evening meal, a business lunch with a view or a great traditional Sunday lunch. During the summer, some of the most popular establishments are full to bursting during key times of the week. Originally a Moorish fortress (the nearby Montemayor Castle is visible evidence of this), the position of this picturesque village has made it the ideal location for prospective property purchasers wanting to live within a short drive of the sea (Benahavís is seven kilometres inland), yet would like a little peace and seclusion of which there is a plentiful supply in this village in the mountains. Over the years real estate in Benahavís has performed well, holding its value, as one would expect of a location that is so desirable and has such an excellent reputation for offering the perfect Spanish lifestyle. Anyone looking to settle in Spain will benefit from its great climate, unmatched sense of history, fabulous views and close proximity to everyday amenities such as supermarkets, schools, health centres and – since this is the Costa del Sol after all – some fabulous beaches. Benahavís is truly a place where a marriage of the practical and the scenic really is possible.
