Forming part of the charming town of San Pedro Alcántara, Guadalmina is one of the Costa del Sol’s most well established residential areas.
Some of the reasons for its enduring popularity with locals and expats alike are its conveniently central location (it lies almost exactly halfway between Marbella and Estepona), the care that has been taken to ensure that over-development has not occurred and the number of facilities that it offers.
This leafy suburb is laid out around its golf course and is roughly divided into two sections: Guadalmina Alta, which lies north of the main CN-340 highway and Guadalmina Baja, which borders the beach on the south side of the road.
The Club de Golf Guadalmina was originally constructed in the 1950s and quickly earned a reputation as one of the country’s best, most challenging courses. In 1965 it was chosen as the venue for the Spanish Championship and since then it has been one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular destinations for local golfers and visitors seeking to play a few rounds in the sun.
In the 1960s, when Marbella was beginning to gain its name as a glamorous destination, Sean Connery could be seen striding over the greens of Guadalmina Golf in an attempt to perfect his game and, in his early years in Spain, he actually lived in this green and leafy suburb – presumably to be as close as possible to its rolling fairways!
In 1988 Guadalmina hosted the Spanish PGA Championship and, 20 years later, the title Real Club de Golf Guadalmina was bestowed on the course by King Juan Carlos, who is a fan of the sport himself.
Apart from the very obvious attractions of its beautiful golf course, Guadalmina is an important historical suburb, containing an important archaeological site – La Basilica Vega del Mar – within its boundaries. Fans of ancient history should make their way to the popular beach restaurant, Bora Bora, and ask a local where they can find these fascinating remains of a Roman villa and a Byzantine basilica.
Centro Comercial Guadalmina provides a convenient meeting point, located just off the main road and is the site of many excellent cafés and restaurants. Residents can meet most of their daily needs by visiting this small but perfectly formed shopping centre, since it incorporates a Supersol supermarket, pharmacy, several banks, a dog grooming and pet accessories shop, an English language bookstore, a dry cleaning service and many other boutique style shops. Most enjoyably, its expansive pavements allow the local cafés and restaurants to maintain many exterior tables.
Guadalmina includes a wide variety of properties, from apartments and townhouses to villas that can sell for over a million euros. The appeal of this popular residential area lies largely in the universally high standard of its buildings and its long history as a desirable place to live.
