The estimated 320 days of sunshine per year entice many visitors and residents to the Costa del Sol but very occasionally mother nature can force you indoors so it’s good to know what there is for the kids to enjoy should the heavens open. Shopping is usually a hit with the girls and although most of the independent shops and boutiques are found in the centres of Estepona, San Pedro, Marbella and, of course, Puerto Banús, there are still plenty of opportunities to ‘shop til you drop’ undercover at the large shopping centres in Marbella (La Cañada) and Fuengirola (Miramar). The boys shouldn’t miss out either – both offer a range of activities, cafés and restaurants to keep the whole family happy.
The cinema at Miramar is renowned for having the comfiest (and biggest) seats on the coast! It shows one or two films in English each week with regular screenings throughout the day and evening. For those wanting to stay closer to Marbella, the cinema in Puerto Banús also shows films in English and is conveniently located near the main underground car park, restaurants and Spain’s favourite department store, El Corte Inglés. Don’t forget to ask for your discount parking voucher when you buy your film tickets. There are a number of indoor play areas that smaller children will enjoy, leaving mum and dad a bit of time to relax, or do the shopping. Camelot Park’s child minders at the La Cañada shopping centre will supervise your children while they play with the electronic game machines, sing along to karaoke, bounce on the air filled castles and climb through the ballparks. In Guadalmina, the enormous Galaxia Play is making a name for itself hosting children’s parties, baby play and mother and toddler events as well as providing a great ‘drop in and play’ location for children aged up to 13 years. The soft play area inside covers a huge area but there is also a racing track, secure outdoor playground and a café. Supersol supermarket in Belair (between San Pedro and Estepona) is home to another soft play area called Kidz Kingdom. One of the first to open in the area, Kidz Kingdom has separate areas for each age group to use, ensuring that all the children from 0 to 9 years can have the best time within the safety of their peers. Looking for something more educational? Sea Life in Benalmadena is an indoor aquarium where you can ogle the otters and shudder at the sharks! In fact there are over 2,000 sea creatures to meet as you walk through their spectacular underwater tunnel. You can watch the professional keepers feeding the sharks or, if you’re very brave, touch a crab or a starfish. There is so much for children to do on the Costa del Sol. We hope you’ll spend your time in Spain enjoying all the outdoor fun activities on offer but rest assured that should you encounter a drop of rain, or perhaps just need a break from the sun, the indoor activities are taken care of too.
