The small town of San Pedro Alcantara, just west of Marbella, has undergone big improvements in recent years – first an underground car park its central shopping street and recently a tunnel that allows traffic on the main coastal road between Marbella and Estepona to pass by without hindering residents and businesses alike. Thus connected, San Pedro is now a hot ticket, with great access to all parts of the Costa del Sol, a lively centre full of shops and tapas bars, and a long beachside promenade that is popular with joggers, strollers and dog walkers.

It’s where we have our offices too, close to all these amenities and the coastal road that services the Costa del Sol. You really do sense that San Pedro is blossoming at the moment, and a sure sign of this is the fact that it is fast becoming one of the gastronomic centres along this coast, with fine dining restaurants such as L’Impronta, Albert & Simon, Umami, Da Bruno and La Sala Rincon concentrated along the southern side of town. It is here, parallel to the sea, that a new boulevard has been created above the underpass, leaving a wide avenue open where plans are in place to create some fantastic public recreational spaces. The local authorities are currently studying as many as eleven different proposed designs that form part of the tender process, but all the plans include gardens, walkways, children’s playgrounds, terraced areas, fountains and other water features, as well as large sections of piazza along which Spain’s much-loved café culture can thrive. In effect, the boulevard will be the seam linking San Pedro town proper and its newer extension, Nueva Alcántara. From here, wide walkways and cycling paths already lead directly to the beach area, less than a kilometre away. Framed by a long seaside promenade that links up all the way to Puerto Banús and Marbella itself, this area is also dotted with laid-back beach bars, fish restaurants and cafés where you can relax while taking in views of the sea. Many come here to walk, jog or cycle, reminding themselves just why they live in Marbella as they soak in the sun, stop for a chat or head for the beach. It is this zone, between the beach and San Pedro town, which is expected to become the next hot residential area. Laid out around broad, palm lined trees, with sports clubs and other services within walking distance, Nueva Alcántara offers one of the last undeveloped seaside spots close to where it’s all at in the Marbella area.
