In case you think that people are exaggerating when they boast about how great the quality of life is in Spain, we now have hard evidence to support their claims from the recent Internations survey. The annual poll, which asks 12,500 expats to rank 43 aspects of life abroad, has this year placed Spain in third place.
Internations is a global expat network and it uses the expats’ responses to calculate a score for each country with a foreign resident population. In 2016, Spain was in fourth place, so this year’s rise to the top three is great news and is largely thanks to its resident expats scoring it highly for “excellent climate, superb cultural attractions and its leisure options,” as well as the way in which living in Spain also promotes personal happiness.
It is true that for a time Spain’s scoring was lower due to the recession and perceptions about the economic state of the country. Lack of employment was another factor that worked against its rising to the top of the best countries for expats. Now that Spain is resurgent economically, the country has a much-improved international profile and this year we have seen a very positive rise in new businesses opening on the Costa del Sol, as well as renewed growth in the property and construction sectors. Tourist statistics for 2017 already reveal that this has been a bumper year for southern Spain. Visitors are arriving from new destinations like the Ukraine in larger numbers and holidaymakers from those countries that have enjoyed a special relationship with Spain for many decades, such as the UK and Germany, have increased their presence as well. Undoubtedly, Spain offers safety, as well as spectacular beaches, golf courses, and a modern infrastructure that pleases visitors. Many people are so enthralled by Spain that they decide to purchase a holiday home on the Costa del Sol, whilst others relocate here so that they can enjoy the fabulous climate and lifestyle for 365 days of the year.
