Christmas in Marbella 2018

Christmas is another great reason to spend time in Marbella as Spanish traditions are as joyful as festivities in other parts of Europe, however they are often different and therefore something new to enjoy.

If you are in for the long haul and happy to celebrate over many weeks you will be delighted to hear that the fun starts early in December here, and pushes on through until King’s Day on 6th January.

On 6th December the country observes the anniversary of the referendum to approve the Spanish Constitution with the first bank holiday of the Christmas season. This is followed two days later with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a religious day that is honoured across the world is also marked with a national holiday.
Throughout December festive Christmas lights are switched on in every town, yuletide markets bustle with stalls selling traditional food and beverages, and everyone enjoys musical concerts and outdoor nativity scenes.

Christmas Eve is the most important event of the holiday week when families assemble to eat a traditional dinner, exchange gifts and drink sparkling cava. However the biggest celebrations take place on King’s Day or Fiesta de los Reyes on 6th January, when most of Spain observes the holiday with a family meal, presents, street parades and the traditional throwing of sweets for small children.

Marbella and its neighbouring towns on the Costa del Sol incorporate all the Spanish traditions plus many from the nationalities of their expat communities, which creates a colourful smorgasbord of events. This is a truly wonderful time to live or visit this part of Spain, and it’s a great place to spend time in December and January.
