Spotlight on Marbella’s lighthouse

Marbella´s lighthouse.

Two years ago it was mooted to become a boutique hotel, with plans submitted to the authorities that subsequently failed to come to fruition.

Last week, however, Marbella Town Hall applied to the Málaga Port Authority to acquire the €50,000 p.a. concession with the aim of assuming responsibility for the iconic lighthouse in the centre of Marbella.

Following a project to protect the nation’s lighthouses, Proyecto Faros de España, the town council wishes to integrate the 2,266 square metre plot on which the lighthouse sits into Marbella life.

The 29 metre high structure has kept watch over the shores of Marbella since 1864, originally powered by olive oil and wick, being converted to electricity in 1944, and is still in full working order to this day.

The €350,000 proposal intends to include the creation of an exhibition area, as well as Marbella Tourism and Travel offices. Attractive landscaping is provisioned to offer a leafy space for enjoying this popular area of the town, with pergolas providing welcome shade in the warm summer months as well as water features and urban street furniture.

The seaside promenade is one of Marbella’s most popular attractions and sees throngs of tourists and locals regularly taking advantage of the wide marble-covered beachfront pathway.

Running from the working fishing port of La Bajadilla for six kilometres to the entrance of Puerto Banús, this famous walkway is one of the original features that has attracted holidaymakers and permanent residents from all over the world to live in Marbella. Now beautifully landscaped with bedding flowers and trees, there is a wide and varied range of shops, bars and restaurants offering something for everyone.

The concept is to add yet another reason for visiting this pleasant part of Marbella, and in the process opening up a location that is currently in need of a little TLC.
