Experience the lively summer tradition of San Juan in Marbella.
The magical night of San Juan (Noche de San Juan) is just around the corner! The pagan festival, whose current incarnation dates back to 1928, takes place on June 23rd the shortest night of the year, offering an exciting evening of memorable fun. On this special night there is a vibrant ambience as friends and family, locals, tourists and expats gather on the beaches to celebrate the summer solstice evening, which traditionally represents a night of change ─ from spring to summer, from daylight to night and from fire to water. Large bonfires are lit on all of the beaches along the coast, an ancient method used in the past as a way of warning off evil spirits. Today many still follow the tradition of jumping over the fire and plunging into the sea to cleanse their soul. Throughout the evening crowds enjoy picnics and drinks together next to the bonfire, while others take advantage of the private parties that are organised by the beachfront restaurants and bars, most of which include entertainment and special menus.
San Juan is a celebration to be enjoyed be people of all ages. If you haven’t experienced it before, we highly recommend that you do so this year. The stylish Nikki Beach located in Elviria in east Marbella will be adding a touch of glamour to the evening with a fun-filled celebration featuring live entertainment, fireworks, exotic dancers and much more from 8pm until late! A little further along the coast towards Marbella you will discover the family friendly Bono Beach, which is hosting a Surf & Turf BBQ event featuring fire eaters and live music, while those who would like to add a touch of glamour to San Juan should make their way to Besaya Beach for a swanky á la carte dinner, live music, a DJ show, fireworks and of course a large bonfire that will go on into the small hours. These are just a few of the venues that will be playing host to the celebrations; every beach club and chiringuito along the coast will throw their own special party so keep an eye out for announcements.
