Getting ready for Marbella´s beach season.
Along with the enviable climate, multitude of quality restaurants and first-class sporting and entertainment facilities, the beaches of Marbella are at the heart of its appeal as a favourite destination for international travellers looking for the perfect holiday. With 27 kilometres of coastline there is no shortage of excellent sandy shores on which to bask and enjoy the sparkling Mediterranean Sea—but the excellence of those beaches is no accident. Indeed, it takes considerable effort from the local authorities to ensure they are maintained to the high standards that befit the image of Marbella as a high-end resort second to none for quality. With visitors to the Andalucía region spending around €9 billion a year, it is easy to see why so much effort is taken to keep the beaches pristine. Much work was done before the Easter influx of tourists in cleaning and preparing them for the first major tourism week of the year, and now the next stage of the annual works is due to start. Municipal workers are to replenish beaches in Marbella with some 24,000 cubic metres of sand before the summer to ensure they are in top condition for the main season. In addition a cleaning programme is being implemented—initially at weekends and then daily in the summer—to keep beaches perfect. Lifeguard, first aid and information services will also be put into operation to offer a top class experience. This annual operation is only part of the investment put into the area’s shores. Apart from spending on amenities such as public loos, showers and changing rooms, some €11 million has already been invested in constructing a walkway that will eventually run the entire coastline of Marbella before connecting to similar paths in Estepona to the west and Calahonda in the east. With more than 17 kilometres already completed, the project has proven highly popular with walkers and beach-goers alike. By overcoming natural obstacles such as stream beds and cliffs it has succeeded in linking neighbouring urbanisations and making previously inaccessible areas easier to get to for a wider public. The walkway is a symbol of the lengths to which the public authorities are willing to go in ensuring visitors are provided with the leisure amenities required for an unforgettable holiday experience. This partnership between the natural splendour of the region and excellent public facilities also helps make Marbella—particularly near the shore—a very desirable place in which to live.
