Málaga Airport T2 Refurbishment

Malaga airport refurbishment.

Business is booming at Málaga airport and in response to the increased waves of passengers using the gateway to the Costa del Sol, Terminal 2 is being refurbished at a cost of €8.4m. Visitors may notice that Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, which are adjacent, are quite different in appearance, largely due to the fact that T2 was built 26 years ago, whilst T3 was only completed in 2010.

The makeover will include repainting of the entire building, changing of the flooring and ceilings, the installation of new bathroom facilities and updating of heating and air conditioning, as well as modernising of all fire detection equipment. According to information released by AENA, which manages the airport, the heating and cooling systems located between T1 and T2 are almost at the end of their ten-year life cycle anyway, and because the system is outdated replacement parts are increasingly hard to come by, hence the need for a completely new system.

Importantly, the bathroom facilities are also being updated considerably. The contract for all this work has been put out to tender and firms have until 15th September to submit their bids. It is estimated that the work will take 20 months, with a completion date in either the latter part of 2019 or early 2020. AENA has announced that the project will be carried out in stages and that as much of it as possible will be done at night to minimise disruption to travellers and staff. As management said, it is impossible to close the terminal while the refurbishment takes place due to the number of passengers using the airport – two million passengers passed through in July and it is expected that 2017 will be another record-breaking year for Málaga airport. Other changes include improvements to the car rental and staff parking areas at a cost of four million euros, which should be ready in 2019. Málaga airport has come a long way since the 1990s, let alone its early days in the 1960s. The need for this refurbishment is proof of the continued, and increasing, popularity of the Costa del Sol, which is mirrored by a buoyant property market. Improving this travel gateway to southern Spain is a worthwhile investment and will contribute to the entire region growing an even healthier economy.
