Marbella Local Conquers Wimbledon!

Marbella local conquers Wimbledon.

We are already well into Summer here on the Costa del Sol and once again have been gripped by tennis fever as Wimbledon had us on the edge of our seats. In Marbella we had more reason than usual to be cheering – we’re used to seeing Roger Federer mastering his craft, however there´s a Spanish youngster snapping at his heels!

The Costa del Sol´s own Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is a name to watch after an incredible tour, sailing through the qualifying rounds of the Junior Tournament to become only the second Spanish Junior winner in fifty years. With a Swedish boxer father of Russian nationality and a Russian mother, many are surprised to hear that the youngster is indeed Spanish. The 18-year-old, originally from Rincon de la Victoria, is coached by Jorge Aguirre at the Hotel Don Carlos in Marbella and is showing great promise for future success. Alejandro wasn´t the only proud Spanish Champ – Garbiñe Muguruza, a 23-year-old, originally from Venezuela, beat the formidable Venus Williams to the Ladies Title after losing two years ago to her sister, Serena – adding to the Spanish haul of Wimbledon trophies!

For those who love to play tennis instead of merely spectating, the Costa del Sol is the ideal location. The favourable climate means amateurs and professionals alike can train all year round. There are several well-respected clubs in the Marbella area, including one owned by a tennis legend. Manolo Santana is a four-time Grand Slam winner and until 2008, the only Spanish player to have won Wimbledon. The eponymous Manolo Santana Racquet Club, a stone’s throw from Puerto Banús, has been a regular fixture for amateur tennis players in the Marbella area for many years. Manolo Santana is not the only former player to grace the courts of Marbella. The annual Senior Masters Tour always generates great interest on the coast, giving spectators the chance to see some former champions still playing thrilling tennis. Participants include Pat Cash, Mats Wilander, Carlos Moya and if not the best ever, then certainly one of the most entertaining players of all time, John McEnroe. The tour takes place 28 – 30 September at the Hotel Puente Romano in Marbella.

There are many reasons to love life on the Costa del Sol and if you´re a tennis player, it´s another one of many! Please contact us to find out more about exciting new properties for sale in Marbella.
