Did you know that nestled in the hills behind Estepona there are lions and tigers waiting to greet you? Selwo Aventura is one of the Costa del Sol’s favourite attractions, appealing to children young and old – from babes in arms to grannies and granddads. Even America’s First Lady, Michelle Obama, paid a visit with her daughter Sasha back in 2010. Just a few minutes drive away from the luxury apartments and villas surrounding La Resina Golf, Selwo Aventura is a wildlife park with a difference. Covering over 50,000m2 in area, it is made up of five main sections: Gateway to Nature, Bird Canyon, Central Village, Lakes Reserve and The Valleys. Gateway to Nature, which is the first area to visit when you enter Selwo Aventura, is overflowing with lush tropical and sub-tropical vegetation and home to cheetahs, hyenas, lemurs, wallabies, gazelles, red pandas, gibbons, flamingos and meerkats – what a welcome! There’s even a mini farm for smaller children with chickens, turkeys, sheep, pigs, rabbits and pigmy goats to pet. Older children will love whizzing down the zipline overlooking the Great Lake of Africa or bouncing on the giant trampolines! Once you’ve fully explored the Gateway to Nature, head towards Central Village, right in the middle of the park, and the lions’ residence. You can spend as long as you like observing them from the different lookout points, ensuring you get the best view of these Kings and Queens of Africa. Perhaps less majestic but no less interesting to see in this section are the fruit bats, owls, porcupines and slithering snakes! Safari trailers will drive you further into the wildlife park. There are two routes to follow, the first of which will take you through the Lakes Reserve and past the rhinos, giraffes, hippos, zebras, buffalos and Kanvar, the only Asian elephant ever born in Spain! Next it’s time to follow the Route of The Valleys. Bison, antelopes, camels, bears and tigers will be keeping an eye on you as you drive to the three Hanging Bridges and the 100m long and 16m high Great Bridge of Africa (not for the faint hearted) which you can cross on foot on your way back to the Lakes Reserve and Central Village. Finally, walking through the Canyon of Birds is like winding your way through the rainforest; trees, plants and tropical fauna completely surround you while birds of all different species twist and turn, flying excitedly above your head. You won’t go hungry at Selwo Aventura. The food kiosks and cafes are ideally positioned so that you can enjoy amazing views of the wildlife park while enjoying your lunch or snack. There are also gift shops and souvenir photo shops where the kids can spend their pocket money. Not adventurous enough for you? Then why not stay the night? The Selwo Lodge Hotel has been styled just like an African game reserve. The 23 wood and stone lodgings are split between the Watu and Masai villages. Inside relax in your double room with fridge, aircon and bathroom with hydro-massage bath or shower while enjoying magnificent views of the park, the Mediterranean Sea and even the real Africa across the Straits of Gibraltar. You might even hear the big cats roar as you sleep safe in your bed! Selwo Aventura is open daily from the end of February to the end of October, plus weekends and bank holidays throughout November and up to 9th December. Check the website (www.selwo.es/en) before you visit for discount coupons and combined tickets with reductions on hotel accommodation when purchased with entrance to Selwo Aventura, Selwo Marina and the cable car at Benalmádena.
