Spain’s BLUE Wine Revolution

Spain´s blue win revolution.

A Spanish company by the name of Gik had, not long ago, the audacity to shake up the traditional Spanish wine industry by creating the first blue wine. The drink itself is a mixture between red and white grapes from different regions of Spain including Rioja, León and Castilla-La Mancha, and the components providing its particular colour are anthocyanin, a pigment found in grape skin, and indigotine, a plant-based organic pigment. The people behind the project are six young Spanish entrepreneurs no more than 30 years old, who share a poetic vision of innovation and revolutionary thinking. The idea was born through a recognition of how traditional the wine industry can at times be, which prompted them to think about something different, just out of pure freedom of creative expression. Considering that the young market has a different approach to wine and alcohol in general, they decided to directly target their own demographic, challenging the idea that you have to be an expert to appreciate a glass of wine. Though they claim to have sold more than 70,000 bottles in their first year, with the product being available online in some 25 countries now, the novice wine-makers still encountered a few difficulties along the way. For one, the Spanish authorities refused to label the beverage as wine and banned the brand from advertising it as such. Gik was forced to change the composition to ‘99% wine and 1% grape’, but haven’t kept quiet about their dissatisfaction with this treatment. Making noise through social media, they launched a petition claiming freedom of colour, strategically mobilising their target audience to engage advocates to their cause. As mere observers of this crusade, we can only say that a glass of tasty, sweet blue wine would go down very well in a place as trendy and fun as Marbella. With this being such an international town with a pioneering spirit, it could just be the perfect market for Gik wine.
