Costa del Sol: A sporting paradise.
It is no secret that the Costa del Sol is golfer’s heaven – its unofficial nickname is the Costa del Golf, after all – however, this is not just a great place for those who love to play the game. There have also been many great golfing tournaments held here. The most memorable, and the biggest of them all, was the 1997 Ryder Cup tournament played at Real Club de Golf Valderrama in Sotogrande. Not only was it a great coup for the golf club itself, it also turned out to be a lucky omen for the European team who won – with well-loved world-class player and local hero Seve Ballesteros as captain.
After a quiet few years, the Costa del Sol is once again in the spotlight for high level golf tournaments. Last week the Andalucía Valderrama Masters hosted by the Sergio García Foundation took place at the Real Club de Golf Valderrama. It was a tense start, with storms and thunderclouds threatening to disrupt proceedings, though as is always the case in Southern Spain, the threat lasted a short while before blue skies once again reappeared and the sun shone down on a great victory by Spanish hero Sergio García, who won his sixth European Tour on home ground. It was even sweeter as Valderrama conferred on him honorary membership, in addition to being given honorary life membership of the European Tour.
