A taste of Malaga´s gourmet food in Marbella´s San Pedro.
Owners of villas and apartments in the Marbella suburb of San Pedro Alcántara soon won’t have far to go for a taste of the very best local produce now the creation of a gourmet market in the town has been announced. The recent Sabor a Málaga food fair that attracted 29,000 visitors to San Pedro Alcántara’s elegant boulevard over the course of a weekend was the fitting venue for the announcement to be made by Provincial President Elías Bendodo. The new market will follow the blueprint of the fair and give local producers the chance to sell their wares directly to the public. Also called Sabor a Málaga (A Taste of Málaga), the market will be set up using a grant of €600,000 from Málaga Provincial Government and will become the second permanent site for Sabor a Málaga—the first one in Coín has been deemed a great success, one that is hoped to be replicated in San Pedro Alcántara. Farmers and small local food companies market a wide range of fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants, cheeses, breads, pastries and honey, among other locally produced products. Michelin star chefs in Marbella At the weekend food fair—the third of five to be held in the province—65 producers set up stall to sell their products and offer tastings of a similar range of products also including olive oil, nuts, cured meats, ales, figs, raisins, jams and preserves amongst other edible delights There was a sprinkling of Michelin stardust too as chefs Diego Gallegos and Diego del Ríos held cookery workshops to show the crowds exactly why their food has earned the stamp of approval from Michelin inspectors. For Diego del Ríos—head chef at El Lago restaurant in Elviria—Sabor a Málaga is particularly close to his heart. He is well known for his passionate promotion of Andalusian products and uses them extensively in his culinary creations. Diego Gallegos also uses fresh local ingredients—particularly caviar and sturgeon from Río Frio—at SOLLO, his Reserva del Higuerón eatery. At present it is not yet known when the permanent market will start in San Pedro Alcántara, but once it does it is sure to be an added attraction for the town, which with its modern apartment complexes in Nueva Alcántara and select villas in Guadalmina is rapidly becoming known as the ‘up and coming’ area of Marbella.
