New art exhibition in centre of Estepona.
Estepona continues in its quest to become a cultural hub on the Costa del Sol, as well as one of the prettiest towns on the coast thanks to it carefully colour-coordinated streets. It already has a Ruta de Poesía, a collection of gable-end murals that will be increased in number thanks to the latest competition for new designs, and a new theatre, which is now being extended to include an art gallery.
The Auditorio-Teatro Felipe VI on Calle Santo Tomás de Aquino is now the site of a large and spectacular space that will be used to host art and photography exhibitions. The first exhibition features Malagueño artist Andrés Antúnez, whose drawings of film stars are already well known in his home city. The artist’s exhibition takes a tour of world cinema through its most emblematic characters, accompanied by the memorable catchphrases spoken by the characters in their films. Antúnez was previously known for putting these images and messages on T-shirts for the brand Dibu Naif. His work had already caught the attention of the ‘Unicorn’ Association, but it was at the Malaga Comic Fair in the summer of 2013 that he developed his collaboration with the Costa del Sol Fantasy Film Festival. In the 2014 edition, and for the first time, Antúnez’s drawings jumped from his T-shirts on to the walls of an exhibition hall during the XV International Week of Fantasy Cinema on the Costa del Sol.
The town hall announced that the programming for the Exhibition Hall for the 2016/17 season will change every two months and the themes of the exhibitions will move away from that of more conventional art venues, focusing strongly on works related to cinema, music or comics. The new exhibition space in Estepona will in future host shows by local, national and international artists. The inaugural show of work by Antúnez, which is very much in keeping with Estpona’s mural art, will be followed by exhibitions of ‘Portas de Vinilos Inmortales’ in June and July, and ‘Stars Wars, a Universe in Expansion’, in August and September.
