Spain at the top for tennis and golf.
It has been a fantastic September for Spanish sport, particularly in the two fields the country excels at – tennis and golf. It is partly thanks to Spain’s wonderful climate that it continues to produce great players, because there is ample opportunity to practise without fear of rain stopping play. It is the first time in history that both the men’s and women’s Number One ranking in tennis has been occupied by Spanish players. One name, you will all be familiar with is that of Rafa Nadal who beat Kevin Anderson in straight sets to win the US Open and claim his 16th Grand Slam title. It also put him back in the top spot and a sensational 2,000 points ahead of his close rival, Roger Federer, who now sits in second place. It was Nadal’s second Grand Slam win this year, the first being at the French Open in June. There were some doubts about how he would perform at the US tournament, but he proved critics wrong once again.
Nadal’s win was closely followed by that of Garbiñe Muguruza in women’s tennis, The Caracas-born, Spanish national took the top spot in the women’s singles rankings issued by the WTA. Only two other countries have managed to achieve this ‘double’ – Germany and the USA, making it a remarkable accomplishment for Spain. And in the world of golf, we are delighted to say that a local woman from San Pedro Alcántara has yet another trophy for her cabinet. Azahara Muñoz won the Spanish Ladies Open at Guadalmina Golf Club in September. The 29 year-old is a popular player on the international circuit and has represented Spain at the Olympics as well as making three appearances at the Solheim Cup tournament. Only two years after she debuted, the Rolex Rankings placed her in the Top 20 and she passed both the one and two million career earnings milestones in that same year.Congratulations to all three of these stars – September 2017 has been a great month for Spain and sport!
