Brexit leads to rising number of British residents on the Costa del Sol

25 11, 2019
What was intended as a break with Europe has in recent times lead to a growth in the number of British residents living in areas such as the Costa del Sol. The financial crisis and the Brexit referendum were two events that caused an initial drop in the number of Britons resident in this region, but as the final divorce between the UK and Europe draws closer more and more British people are registering themselves on the padron (the municipal population registry) and flooding into the Marbella area.

We had heard of large numbers of British people acquiring Irish passports or even following finance sector jobs transferred from London to the likes of Frankfurt and Paris, but now there is also a rise in the number of people moving from the UK to the continent. This includes Northern European countries as well as the likes of Spain and Portugal, and while some older residents continue to sell up and move back to Britain, others are making the opposite journey.

Thousands already living here have registered and others are in the process of doing so, as they buy homes, find schools for their children and start up a new life, or simply have chosen to get a foothold on the continent by owning a holiday property that offers the opportunity to become a resident in the country and make it a permanent or part-time home. Málaga province alone now has almost 50,000 British nationals, and the numbers are once again rising steadily—for the first time in six years.

It comes as excellent news to Anglo-Spanish relations and the longstanding British love affair with regions such as Marbella and the Costa del Sol. Above all, the latest resurgence in British interest for this region is an affirmation of such ties and a positive note for the future.
